Magic Leap, simple buzz or technological hope?

Yesterday evening (Wednesday 11 July 8 p.m., Paris time) took place the eagerly awaited ”  demonstration  From Magic Leap on Twitch. Hot interview with one of our experts, Valentin Logeais , on the subject.

Why do you think Magic Leap is attracting so much interest?  : simple buzz or technological hope  ?

Already, the start-up has raised a lot of funds  ! In October 2017, Magic Leap had raised $ 502 million and then again $ 461 million in March 2018. There are therefore many expectations and challenges, both technologically and financially, with the highly anticipated release of its product, the Magic Leap One.

Then, this is the hallmark of Magic Leap  : cultivating the mystery …

Then, it would be a new player in the market for stand-alone Mixed Reality headsets, so far we find the well-known Microsoft HoloLens, but also Daqri .

Finally, on the techno side, there is a real expectation, because the Magic Leap One would use disruptive technology. In particular, Lightfield screens.

Can you explain to us simply what is Lightfield screen techno?  ?

Concretely and simply, in real life, when we look at an object in the foreground, our eyes focus on it and the background becomes blurry. We can get this rendering in photo, video, but so far not in mixed reality  : when we look at a hologram in the foreground, the second plane remains sharp. With Lightfield screen technology, this would be possible and would contribute even more to the realistic rendering of the overlay of holograms in a real environment.

What were your expectations while watching the ”  demo  “By Magic Leap  ?

A live demo  ! More precise information on the device, techno, etc …

And after, what was your feeling, your verdict  ?

Honestly, at first I was disappointed because there was no live demo  ! They were only short videos recorded, so in a controlled environment …

After attending this ”  demo  », What is your technical opinion on this future product  ?

It is always complicated to give an opinion without having seen the device operate in real life and even less without having tested it  !

From what I saw, I concluded that the screens, with Lightfield technology, look very promising. On the other hand, the tracking seems a little weak. It is stable and efficient in rotation, but in translations, we were able to observe “  jerks  “.

The demonstration also does not allow us to realize what the user will see while wearing the Magic Leap One.  :  therefore, we cannot judge either the visual field, the visual quality, or the Lightfield technology.

In short, I think we will be amazed by the quality of the screens but surely a little frustrated by the tracking and interactions.

What would be according to you the two strong points and the two weak points of Magic Leap One?  ?

Strong points  :

  • Lightfield technology for screens
  • The weight  : the product is apparently light, thanks to a remote case, according to what we observed during the keynote last June.

Weak points  :

  • probably the tracking from what the demonstration of July 11 lets us think
  • the design of the product which does not allow to wear prescription glasses  !

The Magic Leap One is for the general public or also for professionals  ?

Most of the Magic Leap One developers seem to come from gaming and all the examples taken refer to this universe, so we tend to think more of the general public at first. But it is very easy to project into industrial uses, as was the case for Microsoft HoloLens, by the way.

In conclusion  ?

We know a little more, but not really more  ! So, I am waiting to see. We still do not know the official price of Magic Leap One. A release date has however been announced.  : this summer. It should therefore not be long.
